I was thrilled to return to Hot Ones: Extra Heat for an episode featuring WWE performers from Netflix. This time, I had the opportunity to create a broader range of graphics and visual effects shots.

My first task was to revise the meter graphics used to introduce each hot sauce. Rather than display each sauce’s Scoville rating, the creative team chose to use a short description and add the sauce name to the graphic instead of relying solely on the bottle label. Adapting the existing design created some alignment and symmetry challenges, but we developed a format that satisfied everyone.

I also created lower thirds for celebrity names and labels. Although clean renders from the previous episode were available, I needed to rebuild the project template and recreate the text styling. Once the template was complete, I could quickly generate one-, two-, and three-line versions. Only a few appeared in the final edit, but testing multiple options helped the editorial team make decisions.

Finally, I created visual effects shots for the show’s “heat moments,” when the celebrity guests react to the increasingly spicy wings. We produced about a dozen shots with a range of approaches and intensity levels. Most were cut from the final edit, but I was glad that my favorite remained (my apologies to CM Punk).

Returning to Extra Heat was a real treat, and I enjoyed taking on a larger role. It had been a while since I had worked with visual effects on live-action footage, so it was especially rewarding to step back into that world.
